The Berlin-Warsaw express may appear commonplace to the locals, but it is unbearably romantic for an 'old boy from Lincolnshire'. For most of my life both cities were behind the Iron Curtain, and now here is this train, a few inches away, and I could just jump on it and go to another country.

People have forgotten just what an astonishing thing rail travel is, even on the most surburban level. Here we have a train dedicated to two of the greatest capital cities in Europe, just ticking away with empty seats. Every rail journey is an adventure: but here the adventure is very very close.
