The mill was supposedly built in 1860, and the style of large brick tower as part of the adjacent warehouse supports this: brick building was cheap and the profits of the corn trade high in that period.

The arms here bear the date 1905, and the use of steel for both the beams and the vanes of the sails is unusual, and entirely consistent with that date. The use of Thatch for the body is not, suggesting that the date of 1860 is more likely, but even at that date thatching was likely to have been a romantic affectation rather than normal.
